The first Sprint weekend of the 2024 season is underway and the grid is set for Saturday Morning’s 100km dash. Keep reading as we recap how Albono fared during FP1 and Sprint Qualifying.
With just a single hour to gather data before four competitive sessions began, getting some uninterrupted running around this returning venue was crucial.
A short red flag for a grassfire on the inside of Turn 7 was the only disruption as Albono was able to cycle through his run plan.
After some long-run simulation, Alex wrapped up the hour by bolting on the soft tyres and setting a 1:37.229 which was good enough for P8.
Roll forward to 15:30 local time and it was time for Sprint Qualifying. With the mandated medium tyres fitted, Alex banked a 1:38.043 after his first flying lap, placing him in P16.
He confirmed over the team radio that the track was “totally green” after some light rain had rolled in following FP1.
The track rubbered in some more before his final push, and Albono was able to improve, setting a 1:37.812.
But he found himself three-tenths shy of the dotted line, meaning he’ll start the Sprint from P18.
Changes to Sprint regulations mean that we are no longer in Parc Ferme conditions after the Sprint race, so there is a chance to shake things up before Grand Prix Qualifying tomorrow.
For now, the focus is on maximising the opportunities presented his way in the Sprint race, live at 11:00 local time on Saturday…
