After both Williams cars were disqualified at the end of Saturday's Qualifying session for a rear wing irregularity, Alex showed great pace to recover to 14th during the Grand Prix on Sunday.
That irregularity prompted Williams to make changes to Alex's suspension setup, meaning he was required to start from the pit lane.
And that meant that Alex was facing an uphill battle from the start. Overtaking opportunities were hard to come by for much of the race, and both Williams cars appeared to gamble on a Safety Car by going very long on their Medium tyres.
Alex made it to lap 41 before pitting, demonstrating some really impressive tyre management – and was one of the last four drivers to pit when he did finally box. He emerged in P19, but was swiftly up to speed on the Soft tyres, and for several laps was among the fastest cars on the circuit.
Suddenly, the circuit was presenting overtaking opportunities, and Alex was taking them. Gasly, Ocon, Bortoleto, Colapinto and Lawson were all passed by Albono in the final twenty laps of the race, indiciating the 'true' pace of that FW47.
James Vowles spoke to Alex about the error in the team's rear wing setup on Saturday, saying on the team radio at the end of the race; "thank you, Alex. Really much playing the team game there. I'm sorry we didn't get points for you today. We had pace. Again, apologies for what happened, but we come back together in Austin, looking forward to these next few races."
After the race, Alex said, “Starting from the pit lane today we knew it was going to be a bit of a test session for us.
“We did a test setup just for some learnings and it didn’t really work, but that’s okay as we can use that data for future races. We had good pace when we were in clean air, we just got caught up in some blue flags and were stuck in traffic for majority of the race.
“Even when we did have fresher tyres, we had to wait for the car in front to catch the cars further up, so it was just one of those races where we couldn’t do much, especially with no safety cars. There were a lot of learnings from this weekend, and we will look to tidy everything up for the next weekend out in Austin.”
