Following a strong Sprint performance on Saturday, that saw Alex fight to P6 and take home three points, our No.23 was left with an uphill battle on his hands with a tricky qualifying resulting in a P18 start on the grid for Sunday’s GP.
At lights out it was a tough start, with Albono battling with the cars around him in windy conditions. After initially losing and regaining P18 from Stroll, Alex made contact with Bortoletto at Turn 15 of lap 1 - spinning out before rejoining the field.
It was always going to be a difficult recovery drive from P20 at that point. A VSC caused by an incident involving Alex’s teammate, Sainz, and Antonelli on lap 8 provided an opportunity to swap out his hard tyres for fresh mediums.
Alex returned to the track much faster and began chasing down the cars ahead of him, starting with Hadjar to move into P17 on lap 23. Some reshuffling of the pack with cars boxing head, combined with another mega overtake on Colapinto, saw Alex move into P10 by lap 35.
Our No.23 was on much older mediums however, choosing to switch to softs on lap 39 and returning to the track in P17. Wasting no time at all Alex once again began chasing the cars ahead, going past Hadjar and Gasly into P15.
On the penultimate lap, Albono was able to make one final overtake on Ocon to take the chequered flag in P14.
A tricky day but points over the weekend. No Alex will reset and be ready to go again in just one week’s time in Mexico.
