Alex ended his pan-America triple-header without a chance to demonstrate all that he can do, after a soaking Sunday at the São Paulo Grand Prix.
The wet conditions ahead of Qualifying on Saturday afternoon meant the session was pushed back to 7:30 AM on the Sunday morning – the earliest a Qualifying session has ever taken place.
After showing standout speed to make it through to Q3, Alex's pace was clear. He set the second-fastest time in Q1, while others struggled, before again going P2 in the final moments of the top ten shootout.
Sadly Alex didn’t get a chance to showcase that speed in the race, after the FW46 spun out at Turn 1 and made heavy contact with the barriers, with less than five minutes remaining in that Q3 session.
The Williams Racing team got to work in an attempt to fix the car before the race later on Sunday, but the damage proved too extensive and Alex was forced to withdraw. Investigations are now underway to determine the cause of the crash.
Alex had been feeling hugely optimistic for this Grand Prix, and expressed his gratitude to all his team for the hard work they put in all weekend. All focus now will turn to Las Vegas in three weeks’ time.
In the meantime, Alex flies direct to the Team’s HQ on Sunday night, to go straight to work on the simulator in preparation for the final triple header.
