Austin, you were loud! Alex took to the stage at the Atlassian Williams F1 Team Fan Zone, presented by Kraken, for an afternoon packed with fan questions, plenty of laughs and hosting a Batak elimination game. From sharing what makes the team feel like family to revealing which drivers he’d recruit to take on Doctor Doom, Alex gave the Austin crowd plenty to talk about – including one very unexpected question about James Vowles’ hands.
Barbecue first, everything else second
First things first: Alex was genuinely shocked by the turnout. “I didn’t expect to see such a big turnout. It’s very loud!”
He’d been in Austin for less than 12 hours but had already got his barbecue fix. Alex also praised the US crowds for getting bigger and louder every year, saying, “You never think it can get bigger, and yet it somehow does, thanks to you guys.”
100 starts? Don’t remind him
Alex recently reached 100 starts for Williams, joining team legends such as Nigel Mansell. His reaction? “It makes me feel old. Like, really, really old.”
Despite the milestone, Alex was quick to point out that he still has plenty left to achieve with the team. “I don’t feel like I’m at the end of my career. It feels like there’s a lot more time left in me with this team.”
James, we need to talk about your hands
With James Vowles due on the Fan Zone stage the following day, Alex was given the chance to ask him a question he couldn’t dodge.
“He has literally the softest hands I’ve ever met,” Alex revealed. “I don’t know if he gets manicures, I don’t know what his routine is, but ask him what his routine is!”
Alex Albon, game show host
Alex took charge of a Batak elimination and Williams quiz to crown Austin’s biggest fan, even putting his own reactions to the test. Despite admitting he hadn’t tried Batak in a long time, he scored 54.
He also made sure nobody went home empty-handed. “Williams were ruthless,” he joked, explaining that he’d insisted everyone should receive a prize.
Over to the fans
You came prepared with some brilliant questions.
One fan asked Alex and Lily about Project Hail Mary, and who would be Rocky and Grace. Alex claimed Rocky, joking, “I communicate like Rocky, at least!”
Another asked where he’d spend a year driving around a single circuit. Alex initially picked Monaco where he lives, before realising he’d be stuck in the car and switching his answer to Monza.
Then came the question of the day: building an Avengers team from the F1 grid to take on Doctor Doom. Alex picked Max Verstappen for his savage streak, Valtteri Bottas as he seems like “the cool one who cuts the wire with three seconds left”, Fernando Alonso because he doesn’t care what anyone thinks, Carlos Sainz as the smooth operator and Isack Hadjar for his Hulk-like anger.
Things got more reflective when he was asked about Claire Williams’ influence on the team. Alex said he’d always be grateful for her role in bringing him to Williams, highlighting the family atmosphere created by Claire and Frank.
Finally, asked about his favourite track of the season, Alex chose Spa. He admitted that the new regulations have affected some of his old favourites, including Japan and Silverstone, although Japan remains “still a lot of fun.”
Thanks to everyone who came down to the Austin Fan Zone and made it one of the loudest yet!
