The Atlassian Williams F1 Team’s London Fan zone once again provided fans with a glimpse into life beyond the track for Alex Albon. Joining Matt and Tommy from the P1 Podcast on stage, the Thai driver shared a number of personal stories, giving his supporters a further chance to learn about the man behind the helmet. Here are some of the best things we discovered about Alex that you may not have known.
He would take on a George Russell-sized duck
One of the more unusual questions of the afternoon saw Alex debating whether he would rather fight ten duck-sized men or one George Russell sized duck. Initially he seemed more focused on picturing the scenario than answering it, “I’m trying to think of a duck that looks like George”, he said. After weighing up the options, he confidently declared: "I'm going to take George on man to man, or man to duck.”

He used to have some very specific pre-race superstitions
Many racing drivers are known for their rituals, and Alex admits at one point he was no exception. Explaining that his Thai heritage has influenced some of his beliefs, he revealed the only thing he has stuck to is wearing bracelets blessed by monks which are said to bring good luck. However in previous years, Albono had a specific routine: “I used to have to get in the car on the left side, I could only wear three pairs of underwear (one for each specific day on track).” Eventually, Alex decided to challenge these superstitions that he had built up. He said “I was like, I’m going to do one race where I go against all of my superstitions”. Much to his surprise the race weekend went well, helping him move on from his old rituals.
If Formula 1 disappeared, he’d try many different race series
If Formula 1 ceased to exist, Alex already has a pretty good idea of what he would like to try. Rather than committing to just one championship, he would prefer to sample many different forms of motorsport. “I’d love to be able to have the feeling of just jumping in and out”, stating that everything from NASCAR to endurance racing, and potentially the Indy 500 would be on his radar.
His superhero power would be talking to animals
Asked to create his own superhero origin story, Alex turned to the crowd for help. When one fan suggested the ability to talk to animals, he immediately accepted the idea, saying, “talking to animals, yes, we’re going to go for a Dr Dolittle hybrid”. Alex further developed his story by saying that the powers would come from being bitten by a monitor lizard in Thailand. Matt and Tommy went on to joke about how he could use the power to talk to groundhogs, suggesting they could be used as a blockade on track to help him win!
His first Silverstone memory involved a screaming V10
Long before Formula 1 was even in the picture, Alex’s first experience of Silverstone was at the age of eight while picking up his karting license. During the day, Felipe Massa was running on the track, allowing young Alex and his father to hear the screams of the V10 engine. From that moment, It was clear the direction he wanted to go, he remembers thinking “oh my god, this is what I want to do” even after admitting the loud engine did intimidate him!
