Alex Albon’s run of points-scoring finishes came to an end in Spain after a challenging weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
After sitting out FP1 and completing just five laps in FP3, Alex headed into Qualifying with minimal track time. Despite that, he delivered an impressive performance to put his FW47 in P11 – no small feat at a circuit where Williams has traditionally struggled in recent years.
His race was compromised almost immediately. Just seconds after lights out, contact at Turn 1 caused damage to his car. He pitted on Lap 6 for a new front wing and new Softs, rejoining at the back of the field. But it quickly became clear something still wasn’t right, with Alex reporting a massive imbalance in the car.
On Lap 24, he found himself in a wheel-to-wheel battle with Liam Lawson. Forced to run wide but keeping the position, the stewards handed Alex a 10-second time penalty. Before the penalty was dished out, the two battled again – this time causing further damage to his front wing.
Ultimately, the damage was too severe to continue, and the decision was made to retire the car after serving the penalty. For just the second time in 2025, Albono has missed out on points but he'll be looking to get straight back to it at the Canadian Grand Prix in two weeks time.
"We lost out quite heavily at the beginning and were on the back foot into Turn 1," Alex shared post-race. "The cars ahead were avoiding each other, and I was the one to get hit, so we were forced onto a three-stop strategy to replace my front wing.
"I tried my best to stay out of the way in each incident, but we ended up with damage both times.
"We need to look at this track and understand why it’s such a challenge for us. I want us to be a top team, and it’s important to put the car to the test at tracks like this so we can learn valuable lessons and optimise our car for the future.
"Overall, I feel like I’m in a good rhythm with the car and I’m looking forward to Canada."
