With plenty of eyes on Atlassian Williams Racing's two drivers ahead of the start of a new season, Alex delivered an impressive opening performance on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Melbourne.
With a 1:16.245 finish in Q1, Albono was off to a flyer. He ended the first Qualifying session in P8, setting the tone for what was to come.
The soft tyres were Alex's best friend today as he went on to bank laps of 1:16.017 in Q2 and 1:15.737 in Q3, setting himself up to start sixth on the grid on Sunday.
It was a great day overall for the team, with new teammate Carlos set to line up in 10th on Sunday.
Today marked the team's first double outing in Q3 since Baku in 2024.
Alex's performance today will set the tone for the race on Sunday, as well as for the season to come – and James Vowles was particularly pleased with his driver's showing on the track.
"Well done, Alex! What a great way to start the season.
"We're in a good position for tomorrow. It's going to be difficult conditions, but that's where I want to be on the grid.
"Well done everyone. This feels so different from last year. Everything feels so different."
