Alex Albon gave fans a glimpse into life away from the race track during his appearance at the Singapore Fan Zone, sharing stories from the F1 drivers’ recent boys’ trip, revealing what he would do if he wasn’t a racing driver and answering some brilliant questions from the crowd. Here are five things we found out at his appearance that you might find interesting!
1. George Russell took karting very seriously on the boys’ trip
The drivers recently enjoyed a little holiday in Langkawi, where they spent time together away from the paddock. Alex described it as a welcome opportunity to spend time with his fellow drivers away from the race track.
“It was nice to actually spend time with some of the other drivers, we went on a little holiday, which was lovely,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve ever spent a lot of time out of a race track on holiday together, so a lot of funny stories.”
But when it came to karting, George Russell apparently had no intention of taking it easy!
Alex revealed that George, who usually organises the group’s activities, had arranged a special kart for himself, complete with new tyres and the best equipment available.
“George usually books most things, he’s the guy that books everything,” Alex explained. “He’s called up the karting place and he’s asked for new tyres, he’s asked for the best kart.”
Unsurprisingly, George went on to win the race.
“George is the most competitive person ever and obviously he did very well he won the race, so we were like, OK, George isn’t allowed that kart again.”
However, George wasn’t giving up his advantage easily.
“He wouldn’t move, he would just stay in the car, so he had the same kart again,” Alex laughed. “So we tried to hit him off because that’s what you have to do to stop him from winning.”
And what about the craziest thing they got up to on the trip? Alex kept those details to himself, admitting: “There was some crazy things but we would get in trouble.”
He did offer one final clue about the drivers’ time away: “You have to imagine that drivers enjoy driving and then we all got given our own rental cars, so we ended up having fun with our rental cars.”
2. He could have a future as a food vlogger
If Formula 1 wasn’t an option, Alex already has another career in mind: food vlogging!
“I’d like to pursue my food vlogging era,” he told fans. “I enjoy it, I enjoy eating food.”
But that’s not his only interest outside racing. Alex also shared his love of architecture and design, revealing that his Instagram feed is full of houses and architecture inspiration.
“My grandpa used to be an architect, I love designing things,” he explained. “I didn’t design my helmet, but I like the process of designing things.”
And if you’re wondering what Alex’s social media algorithm looks like, he gave fans a pretty good idea: “I think if you looked at my For You page on Instagram, it’s like architecture and houses.”
3. He’d choose to be a Persian cat for the day
Fans also got to discover which feline friend Alex would choose to be if he could turn into a cat for a day.
With several cats in the family and a particular soft spot for Persians, his answer was an easy one.
“We have a few, we have shorthairs, we have a few mostly Persians,” he explained. “I would say we have a soft spot in our family for Persians, so yeah, I mean, am I being the cat?”
After a brief moment of consideration, he settled on his choice: “I’ll be a Persian then.”
4. Night races mean a very different routine
Singapore’s night race might look spectacular under the lights, but preparing for it requires a significant adjustment behind the scenes.
Alex explained that drivers shift their body clocks towards European time, despite racing in Southeast Asia, meaning their daily schedules look very different from usual.
“The biggest thing for us is the time zone shifting,” he said. “Even though we were in Malaysia last week, we are now going back to European time.”
He continued: “I wake up around two or three o’clock and I go to bed around four or five AM, so now even this Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, every day we’ve been shifting our time zone.”
It’s not just their sleep schedules that change, either. The lighting around Singapore’s circuit can affect their vision, so drivers use special visors to help with the bright, artificial lights.
“The biggest thing I would say is our eyesight, because it’s a night race,” Alex explained. “The visors that we use are slightly different, because there’s so much fake lighting on a track like Singapore, so it’s quite bright and aggressive and your eyes feel the blur a little bit.”
Thankfully, there’s a solution: “We have special visors to help with that.”
5. His favourite Singaporean dish isn’t durian!
With Alex sporting his durian-inspired helmet for the weekend, one fan was keen to know whether the famously divisive fruit was also his favourite Singaporean dish.
Unfortunately for the durian fans, the answer was a firm no!
“My favourite is Hainanese chicken rice,” Alex revealed, much to the crowd’s delight.
He also shared that he and Lily had visited a restaurant serving bak kut teh the previous evening, with Lily particularly loving the dish.
“We went to bak kut teh last night, Lily loves it, she’s obsessed,” he said. However, Alex admitted that the hot soup made for a sweaty meal. “It’s too hot, you like eating soup and you’re sweating the whole time, but it was very good.”
A few more Fan Zone highlights
Alex also answered a few more entertaining questions from the crowd, including which members of the Twitch Quartet he would choose as drivers and race engineers.
Asked to split himself, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc and George Russell into the two roles, Alex took a moment to consider his options.
“I think obviously we can all be drivers, but then you have to think about who would not be good engineers,” he said, before settling on his choices. “I would say George and myself would be the engineers, and then Lando and Charles would be the drivers.”
He also gave fans an insight into the inspiration behind his special durian helmet, explaining that the team had been looking for an iconic local food that could inspire an entire design.
“We thought, what’s an iconic food that you can use as a whole thing? And then we thought the durian,” he explained.
There was a practical reason behind the choice, too, with Alex joking: “Hopefully other drivers stay away from me, we could use it as a distraction, so that was the plan.”
And while he was asked to recreate the now-famous beach walk with Lily, he managed to dodge the request rather than give the crowd what they wanted!
One thing he was happy to do was thank the Singapore crowd for their incredible support, saying: “Amazing, always. I feel like we don’t get a better reaction than this anywhere we go!”
A big thank you to everyone who came along to support Alex at his honorary home race.
