Alex is in a bunch of cars trailing Tsunoda in P7. All to play for in the closing stages here... Lap 51/70.

Alex waves farewell to Zhou as he laps him. Lap 48/70.

On go the medium tyres. Alex retains P10, 1.6 seconds behind Ocon. Lap 46/70.

"Box this lap. In-lap critical." Lap 45/70.

Other cars are starting to pit for dry tyres. When will the moment arrive for Alex? Lap 44/70.

"Can you give me feedback on track conditions? Primarily sector 1." "It feels a bit tight to go now. Sector 1 is about two seconds off." Lap 41/70.

Once again the track is drying up. When will we make the switch to slicks? DRS enabled. Lap 40/70.

Alex is keeping this nice and tidy in P9. 2.4 seconds behind Stroll. He will have to defend from Ocon behind first though. Lap 38/70.

"When we get to the right conditions, we're looking to go medium to the end on the right conditions." Lap 36/70.

"Front tyre temp still climbing. Rears are in a good shape. Gap behind at 2.2. Gap ahead at 2.1." Lap 33/70.

"I can't see anything in my rear view mirrors with the dirt, so just give me a heads up." Lap 30/70.

The field is bunched right up - apart from Leclerc, who boxes for... slicks! Lap 29/70.

A lot of moving parts here. Ricciardo pits and serves a penalty. Alex is P11, just behind him. Lap 28/70.

Alex heads in for fresh inters. Lap 26/70.

Logan spins out of Turn 4. There is a Safety Car with rain approaching. This could get very interesting. Lap 26/70.

6 seconds to Stroll in P8. Rain is on the way... Lap 23/70.

"We are expecting rain in another three to four laps."

Alex is flying here! He takes Leclerc on the very next lap, in exactly the same way. Up to P9! Lap 21/70.

Alex gets a great drive out of Turn 10 and takes Yuki on the straight. Into the points, Leclerc next... Lap 20/70.

DRS enabled. Alex gets so close to passing Yuki into turn 13, but the Japanese driver leaves him no space, and Alex has to take the escape road. P11 for now. Lap 19/70.

Alex is right behind Tsunoda in 10th. There will be some big strategy calls to make here. Lap 18/70.

"It's getting close [to slick tyres]" Alex reports.

Alex gets Hulkenberg and is up to P11. Lap 13/70.

Hulkenberg is slow on the extreme wets, and Alex is in a bunch of cars behind him. Ricciardo (7th) also has a time penalty. Alex is P12. Lap 13/70.

"Check the front right and rear right. I hit the wall." "Pressures are ok, aero looks good," is the reply.

The sun is beginning to punch through the clouds here, and the track is drying up. The inter tyre is quicker than the wet now. Lap 8/70.

"Tell me the gaps behind because I can't see," Alex reports.

It's a very tricky opening lap. Alex loses a couple of places. P13 as it stands. Visibility very poor.

Everybody on inters apart from the two Haas cars.

This could be a tricky first corner. Supreme skill needed!

As we've been saying all weekend, this is a day that will be affected by the rain. It has been raining at the circuit for some time, and the track is very wet – might we be in for a rolling start?

It's another rainy day in Canada – how will Alex fare starting from P10?

So it'll be P10 for Albono tomorrow. A really strong session, with lots to play for tomorrow.

"OK, nice job. I think that's better than we thought we'd perhaps be after P3. So, nice job."

"Well done, Alex. There's more in it, I know that, but still really well done in very difficult circumstances in Q1 and Q2. There's more to come tomorrow." "Yeah, yeah. It's a shame. We got through that as best as we could."

Alex sets a 1:12.796, which is good enough for P10. A strong afternoon for our Thai driver!

4 minutes remain. "Straight out. Track is clear"

Alex's first time is a 1:13.228. Good enough for P5 for now. Back to the pits for a quick reset.

Here we go. A second consecutive top 10 shootout for Albono.

He's into Q3 with another stunning lap at the end! It's a 1:12.485 to get into the top 10. Here we go!

Alex improves his time to 1:12.900. It's good enough to get into the top 10, but will he stay there? Less than two minutes to go...

Alex boxes and gets a new set of soft tyres fitted. He's going for a fast-slow-fast sequence.

Alex's opening lap is a 1:13.453. This will be tight. 10 minutes remain.

"Is this supposed to be the worst of the rain? It's raining for sure, but... it's not affecting lap time really."

"The weather is Level 1 currently. Be alive to a stop."

And rain is falling! It could be all decided in these opening minutes of the session.

Alex pulls it out of the bag when he needed it! He was in the drop zone but he pulls a brilliant lap out - a 1:12.896 - to get into Q2.

He is P14 as it stands. One minute remains, one more push!

Alex boxes - via a stop on the weigh-bridge - before a final push in this session.

Alex shaves more time off his best. It's a 1:13.874 to put more distance between him and the drop. 8 minutes remain.

Alex sets a 1:14.398 to get into the top 10 as it stands. More than a second clear of the drop zone as it stands...

It's a very busy track as everyone looks to get times on the board before the rain falls. Alex is trying to find a gap.

This qualifying session stands an 80% chance of being affected by rain, according to the stewards. This could be very interesting.

"The other cars' cool-downs are way too slow."

Alex improves to a 1:15.789, but is struggling with his brakes. The team will look into it...

Zhou's car is cleared and we are back underway at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve...

Zhou has brought out a red flag, after beaching his car on the entry to turn 2. Alex heads back into the pits having been unable to complete a full push lap.

FP3 starts under blue skies, and it's a very busy track. Alex heads out on the medium tyres.

After a disrupted first day, it's time for a final hour of practice. Are you ready?

And that's it for Day 1 of the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix weekend. A disrupted FP1, but lots of valuable learnings to take from changing conditions in FP2. Focus turns to tomorrow!

The track is drying up as the session comes to a close – and everybody is keeping an eye on their tyre allotment. Alex boxes to save his inters for tomorrow.

"Tyres are in the window but traffic doesn't look great for you." "What's the pace like?" Alex replies.

"Can this Ferrari get out the way?!"

Everybody dives into the pits to watch the skies.

Everybody's struggling for grip as the rain starts to fall once more in Montreal. Those might be the fastest times of the day, but there's still plenty of learning to be done.

Alex improves to a 1:16.977. Lots more progress in this session so far!

Alex's first "proper" push lap of the day is a 1:20.382, which puts him into P6 behind Lewis for now...

"Let me know about the lap times, because I don't know if it's raining more or less than what it was for the others."

Alex heads out on the soft tyres, but rain is continuing to fall at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve...

The pit lane exit is open as scheduled this time around – but as rain starts to fall, it's looking like wet weather tyres once more.

We are counting down the minutes to FP2. Will we get more running than earlier today?

Just four installation laps for Alex in FP1. All eyes on FP2 in a couple of hours' time!

Alex is blocked on a busy track during his push lap, and he boxes as the chequered flag falls.

And he's on the red-walled soft tyres. Less than two minutes remaining.

The track is drying up quickly, and the cars are staying in the pits – potentially waiting for a late run on dry tryes. Six minutes to go.

We are back running again. Blue skies overhead and 22 minutes remaining.

Alex gets out on track but boxes. And we have a red flag as ZHO has made contact with the wall and stopped at turn 6.

"Going straight out, track is clear behind."

Albono is heading out on the extreme wet tyres.

And the track is open. 38 minutes remaining to get some work in!

In fact, Race Control bumps up its expectations. The pit exit is open from 13:51.

Race control announces that they expect to be able the pit exit at 13:55 local - in just under 10 minutes!

Ponchos are going back on in the grandstands. It's not looking great for FP1...

A message from Race Control, given the track conditions: "Session will start on time - pit exit will remain closed." So it'll be a while before we see any cars out there, we think...

It's very wet here in Montreal. A hail storm hit the track this morning, and while it's stopped raining for the moment, we think another shower is on the way...
